New Voices: The School For Creative & Performing Arts

This Spring, New Voices collaborates with SCPA and Over the Rhine Community Housing to explore Over-the-Rhine.

Our final time working together involved each student selecting one image to represent their experience during this project and then creating a piece of writing to accompany the image.

Students and OTRCH residents explored several different sites under development by OTRCH throughout the neighborhood surrounding Recovery Hotel.

Students and OTRCH residents explored the recovery hotel with interpretive photographs of common spaces and apartments during our most recent session.

Our work this week began with OTRCH residents pointing out sites of special significance to them in the neighborhood surrounding the Recovery Hotel. Students and residents then interpreted these sites through words and images.

Our first collaborative project at the Recovery Hotel involved working in small groups to create panoramic images of the main lobby and other public spaces in the building. Everyone responded to these images with interpretive writings.

After touring the Drop Inn Center and giving a reading and show of photography to residents there, students selected images to use as postcards and added interpretive writings to their selections.

We visited the Greater Cincinnati Coalition for the Homeless to learn about their work and about Streetvibes. We photographed along 12th street and down the Gateway Quarter of Vine Street on the way back to SCPA.

We met activists Bonnie Neumeier and Jen Summers from Peaslee Neighborhood Center who took us on a tour of Over the Rhine to point out significant sites.

We met to discuss past photo projects in OTR and to review the history of OTR over the past 10 years. We talked about variable meanings of photographs and practiced with cameras for the first time.
